Dirk Becker about a special house in the old town of Palma de Mallorca. An attempt at a declaration of love.
»Why stay in a hotel when you can live in a palace?« asks the host couple of the ›Palacio Can Marques‹, Kim Schindelhauer and his wife Aline Matsika, rightly on their website. They have transformed the more than 300-year-old palace in the old town into a tasteful hide-away from Palma. Right in the heart of Palma and overlooking the Cathedral. All 13 suites are extremely luxurious without ever appearing clumsy. Skilful eclecticism rules everything: this is where old meets new, across the centuries. The Palacio Can Marques was renovated over a period of seven years and today it shines down to the last detail. Each object tells a story and of course the whole property has its own story. The host couple themselves call it the ‘Secret Garden’ and indeed it has something of the fabulous ‘Secret Garden’ about it; an oasis within the oasis. Anyone who has experienced Palma full of people in the summertime is guaranteed to find peace and quiet here. The same applies to the ›Palace Roof Terrace‹. A sundowner here has enormous calming powers, which is also due to the spectacular view. Precisely because it is so beautiful, you should treat yourself to a second drink and give yourself the German frugality. It’s worth it: great service that deserves the name. And when you get hungry, there’s ›BEATNIK BAR & RESTAURANT‹ around the corner: a wild crossover of Asia, Latin America and Mediterranean cuisine. Splendid! It’s also wonderful because you can sleep in the suites without being disturbed. The whole house is a work of art that simply deserves to be visited and admired.
Around the hotel: On the Carrer dels Apuntadors you will find numerous other restaurants and bars such as the ›Jazz Voyeur Club‹. In just a few minutes you are on the beautiful Paseo del Borne and on the Avenida Jaime III, the shopping streets of Palma. Many important sights such as the cathedral, the Almudaina or the Museo de Mallorca are also within walking distance.
